Words & Emotional Healing: How NET Brings Restoration

The Power of Words

by Dr. Joan Housley

Words can tear down or build up. The Creator’s words spoke the world into existence. Song lyrics, the lines of a well-written book telling your story, and a toddler’s first words are all beautiful. A spoken testimony can be life-changing. We can also use words to abuse, demean, or destroy.

The Science of Words

Masaru Emoto’s work was the first time I witnessed the power of words manifest physically. He studied water and ran many experiments. In one, he exposed water to negative and positive words. He froze, photographed, and cataloged the resulting molecular changes.

His research revealed that positive words and intentions produced beautiful ice crystals that reflected light, whereas negative words yielded distorted, black hole-like shapes. For instance, “I hate you” formed black, warped crystals, while “I love you” formed beautiful, organized ones. The injured, distorted shapes could even be “healed” when positive words were spoken over the “hurt” crystals.

And think—60% of the human body is water. This discovery fills us with hope and inspiration, showing that we can all use our words to heal and restore.

Healing with NET

NET, or NeuroEmotional Technique, is a holistic healing method that helps the body and mind release emotional stress that has been held or stored. It’s a non-invasive approach that identifies “stuck” emotions—past hurts, unresolved stress or trauma—that may be affecting both emotional well-being and physical symptoms.

Here’s how it works in simple terms:

  • A trained practitioner asks questions and uses gentle muscle testing to help locate where emotional stress may be stored in your body.
  • Once the areas of stress are identified, through processing memories and words, the practitioner supports you in releasing that emotional weight so that mind and body can move toward balance.
  • Over time, this release often leads to more emotional ease and can also show up as improvements in physical health, energy, mood, or relationships.

If you want to learn more about NET—its research, case studies, and how it may work for you—there are excellent resources at One Research Foundation and on my site New Balanced Life. But know that the core idea is simple: speaking truth, releasing emotional burdens, and inviting healing.

Real-Life Stories

  • A preschooler’s transformation
The first child I worked with was 3 years old. Her mom, a single parent with no support, brought her daughter in out of desperation. The little girl was in preschool and having episodes that put herself and others in danger. Her mom had already explored the conventional route, where the only solutions offered were medications.
Together, we practiced affirmations: “I am beautiful,” “I am safe,” “I can ask for help,” “I am loved,” “I am a good girl.” After just three visits, her behavior changed so profoundly that the preschool asked what medication she was on. Ten years later, she was still thriving.

  • Rose’s story
Rose originally came in for emotional and relational concerns. After experiencing positive results with NET, she asked if there could be an emotional trauma linked to a recurring skin cancer spot.
We uncovered a moment from her childhood where angry words had been spoken over her. After addressing and releasing that memory, Rose’s skin responded dramatically. That was 25 years ago, and the spot has never returned.

  • The rice experiment
While teaching a high school biology class, I guided students through one of Dr. Emoto’s experiments. We placed cooked rice in two jars, labeling one “I love you” and the other “I hate you.” Each day, students spoke the word on the label to the jar.
After a month, the “love” jar showed fuzzy white mold, while the “hate” jar turned black by the second week. The students were amazed—and more importantly, they recognized how words have the power to shape their own lives.

Your Words Matter

Do not underestimate your own thoughts and words. Pause before speaking and be intentional. Create the reality you want with your words.
